Halloween only comes once a year and, as such, can create a buy it, use it one-time, dispose it attitude. Instead, this year, make your own cheaper, better Halloween...Witch Costume.
There are few more popular Halloween costumes for females than that of the witch. Witch-hunts, at least in the USA, were a reality not all that long ago. Perhaps the superstition against witches still remains because of this. Whatever it is, it certainly lures little girls and full-grown women alike to get witchy at least during one time of the year.
This means big bucks for a lot of costume companies. These companies are riding on the fact that you'll bust your wallet for a cute witch costume this year and they're not sparing any plastic, pollution, or resources for you in the process. So why not put up a fight this year and make your own witch costume from things you probably already have around the house?
Here's how you can assemble your own witch costume:
The witch hat is the most notable part of the witch costume and it happens to be pretty easy to make.
Here's what you need (and please find these items used if you can!):
Newspaper
Cardboard
Black Paint
Paint Brush
Tape
Scissors
Here's what you do:
1. Roll 8-10 sheets of newspaper so that they make the shape of a cone. This will be the point of your hat, so try to envision that when you are making it. You might want to even try placing it on your head to make sure it fits.
2. Tape this cone of newspaper together so it can maintain its shape.
3. Cut a circle big enough to be the base of the hat from your cardboard. Place the cone on the cardboard and trace around the base of the cone. Draw another circle 4 or 5 inches from this circle and this second circle will be your hat's brim.
4. Cut out the first circle you drew (the one you traced) and squeeze your cone into this hole. On the inside, secure the two pieces together with tape.
5. Paint the whole hat black with whatever decoration you want and you're ready to go!
The rest of the standard witch outfit is simple really. All you need is a black skirt or a black piece of fabric that can be a skirt. Cut the edges of it into big jagged pieces. Add some fishnets, black boots or heels, and gloomy makeup to this and you're one stylin' DIY witch if you ask me.
